In short

Denmark is a member of many international organisations. This gives Denmark the opportunity to influence the world outside the country. But decisions in the organisations also affect the framework within which Danish society works. The organisation that matters most to Denmark is the EU. The UN and the cooperation with the other Nordic countries are also important.

Hovedkvarteret ligger i Bruxelles i Belgien. Landene arbejder bl.a. sammen om miljø, forbrugerforhold og fri handel. Danmark blev medlem i 1973 efter en folkeafstemning. Dengang hed samarbejdet EF.

The EU is a cooperation between 27 countries in Europe on the economy, politics and law. Its headquarters are in Brussels in Belgium. The countries work together on, among other things, the environment, consumer matters and free trade. Denmark became a member in 1973 after a referendum. At that time the cooperation was called the EC (EF in Danish). Today the EU has influence on a large part of the laws in the member states, for example in economic policy, agriculture and the environment. Danish ministers and civil servants take part when the EU lays down its policies. 21 of the EU countries use the euro, but Denmark has kept the krone.

In 1992 a majority of Danes voted no to the Maastricht Treaty, which was meant to give the EU more influence. After that, the government negotiated some forbehold (opt-outs). An opt-out is an area where Denmark stays outside EU cooperation. Denmark has, among others, opt-outs on the euro and on justice cooperation, for example on police, asylum and immigration. Denmark decides on its own opt-outs, and an opt-out can be removed if the Danes vote for it in a new referendum. The defence opt-out was abolished in a referendum in 2022, when 67 per cent voted yes.

The EU has several important institutions. In the European Council, the heads of state and government meet for EU summits, including the Danish prime minister. In the Council of Ministers, the ministers responsible for the area to be discussed meet. Each country has a commissioner in the European Commission, but the commissioner must not look after their own country's interests. The EU Court of Justice interprets the EU treaty and judges cases about EU rules. The European Parliament is elected by the citizens every five years and has 720 members, 15 of them from Denmark. The presidency of the Council of Ministers rotates between the countries every six months.

I 2015 vedtog FN's medlemslande 17 verdensmål for bæredygtig udvikling. De gælder for alle lande, også Danmark.

The Council of Europe is not part of the EU. It is an independent organisation for countries in Europe, and Denmark has been a member since the start in 1949. The Council of Europe is behind the European Convention on Human Rights, which among other things protects freedom of expression and freedom of assembly and bans torture. The UN was set up in 1945, just after the Second World War, and has 193 member states. The UN works for peace, development and human rights. The UN Security Council can, for example, impose sanctions on a country that attacks other countries. In 2015 the UN member states adopted 17 Global Goals for sustainable development. They apply to all countries, including Denmark.

The Nordic countries are Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. In addition, the self-governing areas of the Faroe Islands, Greenland and the Åland Islands are part of Norden (the Nordic region). The Nordic Council and the Nordic Council of Ministers are among the places where the countries cooperate. Every year Denmark supports developing countries with development aid. In 2026 it is about 23 billion kroner. In relation to the number of inhabitants, Denmark is one of the countries that gives the most. The largest share of the aid goes to Africa, which is Europe's neighbour and, taken as a whole, the poorest continent in the world.
