In short
In Denmark, all citizens can see a doctor or go to hospital when they need to. By far most treatments cost the patient nothing, because they are paid for with tax money. However, you have to pay part of the cost of some things yourself, for example the dentist and the physiotherapist. You also normally pay part of the price of your medicine yourself.
When you are registered in the CPR (Central Person Register) in a municipality, you get a sundhedskort (health insurance card). It is a yellow card, but it also exists as an app on your mobile phone. The card shows that you have the right to help from the public health service, and you must bring it with you, for example to the doctor and to hospital. As a rule, you can choose your own praktiserende læge (GP) yourself if the doctor is accepting new patients. When you are ill, you normally contact your own doctor first, and this is free. The doctor can refer you on to, for example, a specialist, a physiotherapist or a hospital. If you need to go to hospital urgently, you do not need a referral.
You normally buy medicine at the pharmacy. Receptpligtig medicin (prescription-only medicine) requires a prescription from the doctor and is sold only at the pharmacy. You can buy håndkøbsmedicin (over-the-counter medicine) without a prescription, and some of it is also available in some supermarkets. The public sector gives a subsidy for most prescription-only medicine. The subsidy is deducted automatically when you pay.
The regions run the public hospitals, and treatment there is free. Some treatments are outpatient treatments, so you go to an outpatient clinic without being admitted. Some hospitals have an akutmodtagelse (emergency department), where you can get quick help, for example if you have broken your arm. You must phone before you come. There is free choice of hospital, so you can normally decide yourself which public hospital you use. If the waiting time is over a month, you can be referred to a private hospital, and then the treatment there is free. In hospital you often share a room with two or three others, but men and women normally do not share a room. Food, bedding and towels are free at the public hospitals. You have the right to an interpreter, but in some cases there is a fee. Most hospitals offer parents the chance to sleep there when their child is in hospital.
Children and young people have free dental care from the municipality up to and including the age of 21. From the age of 22, you choose a private dentist yourself and pay yourself, but with a public subsidy. When a family has had a baby, a sundhedsplejerske (health visitor) visits them for free. From five weeks to five years old, the child can have seven preventive check-ups at the doctor's. The GP gives free vaccinations against a number of childhood diseases. You pay for vaccinations for a trip abroad yourself.
Denmark has laws intended to prevent livsstilssygdomme (lifestyle diseases), that is, diseases linked to, for example, smoking, alcohol or very fatty food. The age limit for beer is 16. For cigarettes and alcohol over six per cent, it is 18. In nightlife zones you must be 18 to buy alcohol after 10 pm. The shop can ask to see ID. You must not smoke indoors in public places, at workplaces or at schools. Pupils must not smoke or use e-cigarettes during school hours, and as a rule tobacco must be kept out of sight in shops.
